Registration FAQs

Is there a registration fee?
Yes. The registration fee is $35 online until March 1;  $50 registration on-site at the event. Please note, all registration fee dates apply only until the event is sold out.

*All Climbers are required to fulfill the fundraising minimum of $250, except firefighters, whose minimum is $150.

I will be out of town during Climb to the Top. Can I still participate as a Virtual Climber?
Yes. You do not have to physically be at Climb to participate. Virtual Participants can register as an individual or team participant, and are required to pay the registration fee and are urged to raise the fundraising minimum of $250.

What is the difference between an Individual Participant and a Virtual Participant?
An individual participant is someone who is planning to actually climb to the Top of the 200 Clarendon Tower. A virtual participant cannot climb but will fundraise. Team members can register as either Individual Participants or Virtual Participants.

Can I register for Climb to the Top the day of the event?
Yes. Please arrive by 8 am to register. You will have one month after the event to complete the minimum fundraising requirement. Due to the popularity of the event, Climb to the Top may sell out and we cannot guarantee entries. Day-of entrants for Climb to the Top may have to wait approximately 45 minutes for a start time, as not all waves have openings, and we request at least 30 minutes for your information to be added to the race timing software.

Fundraising FAQs

Is there a minimum fundraising requirement?
Fundraising is the most important part of your participation in Climb to the Top. All participants, 18 years of age and older, are required to raise a minimum of $250 (with the exception of $150 minimum for firefighters) to participate and all donations must be turned in prior to receiving your event day packet and bib number. Event day packet materials and bib numbers are MANDATORY for anyone participating in Climb to the Top. Pending matching gifts will count towards the fundraising minimum.

Who do I make checks payable to?
Checks can be made payable to NMSS. Also, remember to include the participant’s name and “Climb to the Top” in the memo section of each check.

What is a Climb to the Top VIP Top Fundraiser?
Climb to the Top- Boston VIP’s are the top 10 fundraising individuals as of 5pm the night before the event in any given year. These individuals receive prizes to recognize their exceptional efforts.

How long does it take for checks to show up on my account?
It depends how many checks the Chapter receives and how close it is to the event. Checks that are mailed prior to the event can take two to four weeks to show up on your account. To avoid the wait, you can always encourage your donors to sponsor you online. Online donations are safe and easy.

You can also enter any checks in your Participant Center and they will post to your account instantly and you will get credit toward your fundraising total. Then, when we receive the checks we will mark them as confirmed. Just log into your participant center and click on the “My Progress” button and then on the "Enter Gifts Received Offline" link. What is My Participant Center?
Every Climb to the Top participant receives an online fundraising account that is accessed through the “Participant Center” tab and logging in with your username and password. Online fundraising accounts enable participants to create personal web pages, provide e-mail tools to solicit donations and have reports to track your fundraising.

What if my company wants to match my donation?
Contact your HR department to learn about your company’s matching gift policies and procedures. Check to see if your company participates by visiting

We will send a confirmation to your company and, upon receipt of the check, we will credit your Climb to the Top fundraising efforts.

Are donations tax deductible and how do I get a receipt?
Yes. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Your cleared check or credit card transaction serves as your receipt. A receipt will also be emailed to online donors once the transaction is complete. Donations of $100 or more will automatically receive an acknowledgement from the National MS Society by the end of the calendar year in which the donation is made.

Teams FAQs

How do I form a Team?
At the time of registration, select the option "Register as a team captain (set up a team)" to start your team.

How do I join/register on a Team?
At the time of registration, select the option "Register as a member of an existing team". Select a team from the list and click the “Join Team” button in the right hand column.

How many team members can I have?
We recommend that each team consist of a minimum of 4 people. There is no maximum number of team members.

What if I have already registered as an Individual and want to be on a Team?
We’re glad to have more team members! If you have already registered, just contact us at with your full name and the team name you would like to join. We will contact you to let you know the transfer has been made.

Can I hand in all my donations as a team?
No, all donations received must be credited to an individual participant. Every team member is responsible for the $250 fundraising minimum and the team total is the combination of all team members’ fundraising totals.

Event Information FAQs

What is Climb to the Top?
Climb to the Top is a stair climbing event that raises funds for the National MS Society. Participants will run/walk up the stairs of a designated stairwell inside the 200 Clarendon Tower.

How many flights of stairs is Climb to the Top?
Even though you finish on the 60th floor, you will climb 61 flights of stairs, because you start on the basement level of the 200 Clarendon Tower.

How long does Climb to the Top take?
This depends on each participant's fitness level, speed and amount of time spent at rest areas. Top racers finish in as little as 8 minutes, while the average participant takes from 20 to 30 minutes to finish. All participants must complete the Climb by 1PM. or will be escorted out of the stairwell and not be allowed to complete the Climb.

Can I take public transportation?
You can take the T to either Copley (green line) or Back Bay (orange line) stations. The John Hancock Tower is located within 2 blocks from either station.

Will there be parking?
Yes. There is discounted parking across the street at 100 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA. You will need to present valid ‘participant’ identification, such as your participant wristband or bib number, to the garage office in order to receive the validation.

Will I receive an event T-shirt?
Yes. All participants receive an event T-shirt on the day of the event.

How many rest stops will there be along our 61 story route?
Climb to the Top will have at least two rest stops along the route. Please watch your footing at these locations to avoid slipping. The exact placement of rest stops will be announced closer to the event.

Will restrooms be available while I am climbing?
Yes. Each rest stop will have access to a restroom.

When will I receive my start time?
Start times will be provided to participants the week prior to the event via email. Please be sure to read all materials sent to you regarding the Climb event.

What time should I arrive?
Please be sure to get to the 200 Clarendon Tower 30-45 minutes prior to your assigned start time. If you miss your start time, you will be placed in the last wave of climbers.

Will there be medical personnel?
There will be emergency crews on site. In case of emergency, volunteers in the stairwell will communicate with emergency personnel.

Can a climber stop on a landing to catch his/her breath?
Yes, but be aware that other climbers are coming up behind you, and you should try to stay out of their way.

Can I wear my headphones while climbing?
Headphones and the use of cell phones are not permitted while climbing.

Can a climber stop at any time?
Try to avoid stopping in the stairwell. If you are fatigued, slow your pace and try to continue climbing. If you need to stop, make sure you only do this on a landing. Never stop on the actual flight of stairs.

If you do not wish to continue, climb to the next rest stop and inform the rest stop captain that you can no longer continue. If you are unable to climb to the next rest stop or are experiencing a medical emergency, do not climb back downstairs! Ask a fellow participant to alert the rest stop captain on your behalf.

Is there a bag check area provided?
There will be a free bag check area for personal items. Please do not bring valuables with you to the event. The National MS Society is not responsible for any lost or damaged items.
