dvocating for those Living with MS

In 2001, Mary Moulds was beginning a new life. She was just married and was busy working her way up the corporate ladder. In the same instant, her life changed again. Just three months after getting married, she became ill with symptoms of numbness and tingling in her left arm. A month later, after many tests, she was diagnosed conclusively with multiple sclerosis.

Mary did not know much about MS. After her diagnosis she used the resources of her local Mid Jersey Chapter to request literature, attend seminars and listen to web conferences to learn all she could about the disease. Since then, Mary has become an advocate for those living with MS and is an active volunteer for the society.

In 2003, Mary organized a team for the MS Walk which has since grown to over 100 members and has raised over $40,000. This year her team, Friends of Mary, hopes to raise $10,000 which would bring them to the $50,000 mark. Mary also participates in the MS “Coast the Coast” ride, when this year she will cycle 85 miles down the New Jersey coast from Tuckerton to Cape May.

Mary is also currently Mrs. Mercer County, United States and will be competing in the Mrs. New Jersey pageant on May 17. Her platform is MS awareness and embracing your diagnosis, life and its possibilities.

Mary is a strong advocate for the Chapter, speaking for the society at seminars for those who are newly diagnosed and acts as a mentor when patients need someone to talk to. She volunteers her time at Kids Camp, was a guest speaker at our Women Against MS Luncheon and has appeared on News12 on our behalf. Mary believes that her life is not about limitations, only possibilities.

On Thursday, March 14, Mary joined the Chapter in Trenton for MS Lobby Day to advocate and get the support of policy makers on crucial issues important to individuals with MS.
