We Need Your Help!

The fact is only about 30% of MuckFest MS participants do 100% of the fundraising. That’s right, only 3 out of every 10 participants fundraise on behalf of the National MS Society! We know we can do better, but we need everyone to step up and help out. If you’re a fundraiser, help your fellow muckers get their fundraising started. Top Five Fundraising Tips

  1. “Ask your mama.” Top Fundraiser and Texas Mucker Veronique N. offered this sage advice, and she’s right on the money, so to speak. Start your fundraising with people who will most likely give you a donation. Usually, that means close family and friends. After you get a few donations, expand your fundraising circle wider to co-workers, neighbors and others.

  3. “Tell your story.” Erin D., Top Fundraising Rock Star, said, “Don’t be afraid to tell your story and be a little vulnerable.” Making your story personal makes it powerful. Even if you don’t have a direct connection to MS, you can make still make your appeal personal because it’s a cause you believe in. Check out the links below for more inspiration.

  5. Be Persistent. Veronique also told us that being persistent is of the utmost importance. Don't be afraid to remind people; remember, everyone is busy. When you get a donation, be sure to thank the donor, celebrate that success and share it. Speaking of sharing, almost all of our fundraisers report success fundraising via social media, especially among friends and family who live elsewhere. It's a good way to keep donors engaged and encourage others to give.

  7. Make Goals and Do the Math. All-Star Fundraiser Michael P. stressed the importance of setting a fundraising goal. Donors like knowing what you’re trying to achieve, and believe it or not, they will give more the higher your fundraising goal. So, don’t be afraid to aim high and mention your fundraising goal in all your donation solicitations.

  8. Get Friends & Family Involved. Erin had another piece of advice that really made sense: Encouraging friends and family to be “part of the fundraising conversation.” If friends and family aren’t running on your team, they can help you fundraise and will often help even if they aren’t asked to directly. The important thing is that you let them know what your fundraising goal is and how important it is to you to reach that goal. Have that conversation.

Get Creative

Don’t be afraid to get creative when it comes to fundraising. The ways to fundraise are only limited by your imagination. Here are two examples of creative fundraising efforts:

Say cheese! From Erin D.: “One of my team members is a professional photographer. He set up a booth at a company event and offered professional head shots with all proceeds going to MuckFest MS. It was very successful!”

Duck Attack! From Ramón R.: Getting others to donate on behalf of someone that we all know and like was something I felt I could genuinely cajole people into doing. And thus began the idea of the Duck Attack. At our organization, we asked people to donate to Yvonne's fundraising account as a way for all of us to genuinely show our support of her efforts. When they did, they also sponsored those cute little rubber ducks, which started appearing everywhere as the donations came in. The Duck Attack was a terrific opportunity to be creative, promote a fun office gag, and support an incredible cause. Folks from all levels of the organization jumped in to support the effort and everyone commented that they really enjoyed the campaign.

Your Personal Fundraising Page

When you registered, a Personal Fundraising Page was created for you. You can find your page by searching with your name and home state here. On this page, people can donate, join your team and see fundraising status.

After you register, it has generic text and a default photo. (Past Participants may have text and photos from previous years.) We recommend that you log into the Participant Center and update your page with a photo and add your own message. If you forgot your username or password? Don't fret, click here for help.

Your Participant Center

When you log in to the website with your username and password, you can:

  • edit your Personal Fundraising Page and add a photo and message.

  • set your fundraising goal—this is very important as it will give you something to aim for.

  • send fundraising emails to potential donors — these messages are pre-written for your convenience.

  • check your fundraising progress and see who has responded to your fundraising emails sent through the Participant Center, and thank any donors or send reminders to those who haven’t donated yet.

Fundraise Fast

Get started with a personal donation. Donate any amount you’re comfortable with—$10, $25, or more. If you do that, and then ask five family members or friends to match your donation, you’ll be surprised how quickly your fundraising status changes.

The Power of the Personal Donation: Veteran fundraisers almost always start their fundraising with a personal donation. A personal donation shows commitment to the cause and it encourages potential donors to give.

Fundraise with Facebook app

You can fundraise with Facebook. Our app installs in just a few seconds on your Facebook page. It allows your entire Facebook network to donate directly to you. Tip: Add your fundraising goal to all donation requests. Donors will adjust their giving to help you reach your goal, so don’t be afraid to aim high, and update your goal once it’s met.

Sample General Fundraising Message

I’m doing MuckFest® MS, a fun mud run with crazy obstacles that supports people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). It’s going to be a blast, but today I’m serious about fundraising on behalf of the National MS Society.

There’s no cure for MS, but we are making progress. Your support will help.

It is because of the funding that the National MS Society receives through events like MuckFest MS that they now offer more solutions for people with MS and provide access to more life-changing services than ever before. In 2017, the Society launched a $1-billion Breakthrough MS campaign to fuel breakthroughs that will change the world for people with MS. Your donation will part of incredible campaigns like this.

This is important to me. It is a cause I believe in and I've already made a personal donation.

Sample Fundraising Email—To Encourage Team Fundraising

As a team, we’ve raised [$AMOUNT] so far. We have a team fundraising goal of [INSERT AMOUNT] to reach before MuckFest® MS.

We’re in this together to make a difference in the lives of all those living with MS. Here are some things you can do to help us reach our goal:
-Send fundraising emails and post a fundraising request on social media.
-Invite more muckers to join our team.
-Follow up with potential donors who haven’t responded.

Be sure to send a thank you message to those who have made donations on your behalf.

Remember, our fundraising efforts benefit the National MS Society, which funds groundbreaking MS research and provides life-changing services for people living with MS. There are also some great team rewards we can earn between now and the event.

Top 5 Fundraising Excuses

We’ve heard them all, but here are the ones we hear most frequently. Feel free to share these with your team.

Excuse #1: I don’t have time to fundraise. We’re all busy, but effective fundraising can be done quickly—we’re talking minutes here! All it takes is setting aside some time to do it. It’s as fast as sending one of our pre-written fundraising emails. See Fundraise Fast to get started.

Excuse #2: Everyone else fundraises, so I don’t have to. Boy howdy, we wish that was true, but the truth is only 30% of people do 100% of the fundraising. That’s right, a very small number of people are doing ALL of the fundraising. So, yeah, we need everyone to step up and start fundraising.

Excuse #3: People only give if they like the cause. No, people give because you are doing the asking and it’s a great cause. You’ll see. Start by asking family and friends who know you and trust you. Early success with them will lead to confident fundraising among a wider circle of friends, family, coworkers, and even people you don’t know so well. Tip: Potential donors will be even more willing to give if you ask them to match or exceed your own personal donation — see how this works.

Excuse #4: I can’t fundraise because I don’t know anything about MS. Okay, but you don’t need to be an expert to fundraise. Spend a few minutes reading about MS and the National MS Society. Better yet, read about your fellow muckers making a difference; their stories will give you the best idea of what this disease is all about and what this event means to people who rely on the National MS Society.

Excuse #5: I can’t do ventriloquism. Fundraising using a ventriloquist dummy worked really well during the Vaudeville era, but now, not so much. We’ve come up with better ways to fundraise. Check out all our new-fangled fundraising tools.
