Impacting the Cause: Modern Display

Terry Praag, Executive Director of Expo & Events, at Modern Expo & Events explains why they, as a company, are involved with the National MS Society:

“A few years ago the Modern Expo & Events Team wanted to choose a local charitable organization to support. In the past, we donated a lot for various causes, but none seemed to hit ‘close-to-home’ or feel personal enough to us.

We have a few associates and/or their spouses who have MS, but at the time, we knew little about MS. We looked at local events that were available from the MS organization and found the Walk MS and Bike MS events. As a group, we agreed that we found the nonprofit we wanted to support because we found it to be a very worthy cause that touches so many people in the Salt Lake Valley and across the country. Our immediate thought to become involved was to offer our event expertise and equipment to the Chapter. We directly contacted Becky Lyttle, VP of Community Development at the Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter, and from that moment forward, we have been a proud supporter of the Society.

Each year we have been involved, we have been impressed by the services offered and touched by the personal stories shared.  Our group has been inspired by the MS family and we have become better people at Modern Expo & Events through our support of the Chapter.”

Traveling When You Have MS

It’s Spring Break! A time when many people are thinking about getting away for a short break with family. With research and planning, traveling with MS doesn’t have to be intimidating. Take the time to plan, and you can have a great time while on vacation, even if you have mobility issues.  Here are some tips to make your vacation a great one:

  • Make a list of your doctors and their phone numbers to take with you. Include the country code if you are traveling internationally.
  • Plan your vacation strategically so you maintain your energy level. Don’t spend so much energy getting from one attraction to the next that you’re exhausted before the end of the day. Don't forget to schedule times to rest during the day.
  • Use a wheelchair, motorized scooter, walker, cane, etc. to make getting around easier if you need to.
  • Select accommodations that do not have excessive stairs.
  • Talk to your doctor in advance about your travel plans so he/she can offer advice specific to your condition.
  • If you’re traveling with hypodermic needles, check with TSA.gov for regulations before getting to the airport.
  • Depending on the type of trip, it might be best to work with a travel agent who specializes in travel for people with disabilities.
  • If heat sensitivity is one of your symptoms, stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, stay in air conditioned accommodations, and plan activities so that you’re in the sun during the hottest time of day.
  • Be flexible. If you wake up with no energy, stay behind and rest.

With proper planning, MS won't keep you from traveling. Bon voyage!
