The Spare Tires are a cycling team whose primary mission is fitness, fun, and fund raising for the fight against Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
For Bike MS, we are classified as a “Friend and Family Team”. The downside to this means our members must buy their own bikes and jerseys. The upside is we have a clean jersey design with no company logo’s getting in the way and we never have to deal with corporate rules.
The Spare Tires team was started in 2009 by Aaron Huston, Marcia Pearce, and Karen Wimmer. The goal for that first year was to give the members a fitness milestone to work toward. That fitness milestone would be the annual Bike MS Tour To Tanglewood.
Since its inception in 2009, the Spare Tires membership has grown as a team and as a family! While all of these members don’t ride in the annual Tour to Tanglewood, we live by the belief that once a Spare Tire, always a Spare Tire. We are always seeking new team members and are hoping for many more great years together.
From a fundraising perspective, the team raised just over $1000.00 in 2009 and has steadily added to this year after year. Since our humble beginning we have raised well over $50,000.00!! We couldn't have done it without your help.
The dynamics of the team range from competitive 16-18 mph riders to a more relaxed mid-range 10-12 mph group, and a totally chill conversational group. Generally, whether training or participating in an organized event, the team breaks into several sub-groups of riders based on ability. The philosophy of the team is that no rider is left behind.
We make an effort to host several team rides and social events per year in the triad area. We also take advantage of the various organized rides that are hosted by local bike shops. The Spare Tires are an amateur team, and the team members are busy people who live all over the country. Therefore training is mostly determined by the individual riders. Some of our team members only get one or two opportunities to ride together each year! If you have a bike…you can be a Spare Tire too!
We are excited to do what we do, and we know we are blessed to be able to do it. We would love to have you help us grow our team and to help us in the fight against MS.
We've formed a team for Bike MS because we want to experience a great ride and help the National MS Society fund research, advocate for change and help people with MS live their best lives. WAe believe in this cause. Can we count on your support?
Bike MS is a physical challenge for cyclists of every level, but it’s so much more than just a ride. The camaraderie, passion, and memories that come from sharing this experience with our team will stay with us for a lifetime. Bike MS is a weekend-long and LIFE-long opportunity to make a difference in your own life, and in the world. It’s a group effort that transcends personal accomplishment and touches the lives of the thousands of people affected by MS in our community. Join us! It’s more than a ride—it’s Bike MS.
Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling, disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Millions of people are affected by MS and the challenges of living with its unpredictable symptoms, which range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
Join our team!
Your gift helps support cutting-edge research and programs and services for everyone impacted by MS. Ending MS means no one will receive an MS diagnosis again. Every dollar helps. Every connection matters.
