Bike MS: Deception Pass Classic 2018

Team Attack

Why we ride

My Mom has MS. It doesn’t define her but it is her reality and something she has dealt with every day for the last 35 years. This is the woman who walked at 5:30am every single morning of my childhood, rain or shine, while raising 3 daughters and simultaneously devoting her career to helping low-income, at-risk moms raise their own. In short, she’s a hard-working, altruistic, passionate, humble, and pure-hearted woman.

Several years ago my Mom was into running, which worried my family because of her symptoms. I asked her “Mom, why do you insist on running when you could really get hurt? You can't even feel your feet. Why not just pick up swimming, hop on the elliptical, or try yoga?” My Mom looked at me and replied “Emily, I run because I can today, and maybe tomorrow I won’t be able to anymore.” Of all the millions of things she has said to me, that one rings through my head over and over.

The truth is that is our reality too – that we have today and no guarantees for a particular tomorrow. For me, not a day goes by that I don’t hear my Mom saying “Emily, I run because I can today” and understand what she really meant, and what her story and her fight really means in this beautiful life. So when my legs ache I feel gratitude for being blessed enough to feel them, and when I want to quit I think of how I have watched my Mom fight and win over and over again. To say I am inspired is an understatement.

Every year I ride and think of my Mom and all of the other incredible people I have met with the NW Chapter of the MS Society. And I will continue to hope that as a community we can help. If so much good can come out of something as terrible as MS, how much more good will come out of our community banding as one to fight? We’re all in this together.

Our goal—a world free of MS

Team Attack has ridden six years for Bike MS—an epic fundraising ride that is changing the lives of people affected by MS and helping drive toward a world free of MS. We'd love your support or better yet, ride with us!  Join our team!

This event draws people of all ages and riding abilities as well as hundreds of volunteers, and is a testiment to the power of community. Every rider receives a bandana with the name and story of someone who has MS.  Without fail, at some point during the ride I look  down at that bandana on my bike and cry my eyes out.  What will really put power in our pedals is knowing that our shared commitment to supporting those affected by this disease matters well beyond what we can even imagine.

Please support our team

The research and support programs that are fueled by this fundraiser have incredible impact.  Every single dollar counts, every contribution is generous.  From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

About MS

When you make a donation, you are changing the world for people affected by multiple sclerosis. Symptoms of MS range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide, and there is not yet a cure. Every dollar raised matters to those affected by MS. Thank you for your support.
