After a four and a half year struggle with pancreatic cancer that was marked by amazing good humor and grace, Eli Rubenstein, 68, died at home on January 27, surrounded by his loving family. Eli dedicated a substantial part of his life to the movement to create a world free of MS, honoring the memory of his father, his uncle, and his sister, who each had progressive MS. As a youth in the 1950's, Eli went door to door in his family's neighborhood collecting donations for the Society. After establishing himself in a successful law career, Eli engaged directly as a volunteer with the Society. He served on the national board of directors of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and spent three years as the board's chairman. He also served for decades on the Greater New England Chapter board of trustees, with two terms as chapter chair. He was honored with the National MS Society's Lifetime Achievement Award and Norman Cohn Hope Award; he was inducted into the Society's Volunteer Hall of Fame; and he twice received the Greater New England Chapter's MileStones in Leadership Award for his contribution to policy vision and fundraising for the society.

Eli is such a special man in so many ways. I was fortunate to have met him when I first joined the national board of the MS Society in 2011. He was a wonderful leader, mentor, friend and had such a passion for the MS Society and our mission to help all with MS and eventually find a cure. I know that many of us strive to carry on what he has started with the MS Society. It will be difficult to do it as well as he did, but I know the path he has created, the footprints and roadmap he has left us will serve us well as we do our best to carry on his legacy.
