Team Deme walks to support Demetria Smith's fight against multiple sclerosis. In 2006, Demetria was diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable and debilitating disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and the body. MS is different for everyone, making it challenging to solve. Demetria deals with a rarer form called primary progressive MS which typically involves a steady decline of the central nervous system. Medications can not reverse the neurological damage, only offer the potential to slow the progression.
Only a few years after her diagnosis, Demetria experienced a rapid and severe decline in her neurological system, developing very serious physical disabilities that now require 24/7 care. It's been a very difficult journey over the past 10 years for our entire family, but we continue to fight her disease together. Demetria's toughness and perseverance provides a great source of inspiration, as does her 5-year old son, Jude, who represents Demetria's love, determination, and energetic spirit.
In 2014, Team Deme participated in our first Walk MS and, over the years, has raised more than $15,000 for the National MS Society. Last year, we were one of the largest teams at Walk MS South Bend, having more than 70 participating walkers and raising over $6,700. This year our goal is 100 walkers and to raise $8,000! The money raised helps the National MS Society fund research, raise awareness, advocate for change, and support programs for those impacted by MS - programs that our family has used to obtain home care, medication, and medical equipment. Please consider donating to our team and joining us during Walk MS South Bend. Thank you for all of your support!
